I am studying the effect of solution chemistry on the formation of nanominerals, in particular, schwertmannite. This is a iron based nanomineral and partly due to its surface area and affinity for heavy metals, it thrives in acid mine drainage sites. The structure and chemistry of schwertmannite has been debated for a long time. For this project, I am looking at how the atomic structure and chemical properties of schwertmannite change in response to varying levels of aluminum replacement of iron.
